 McKinley Avenue Reconstruction

LATEST UPDATE

NOTE: We Recently Learned the scheduled Closing of McKinley Avenue has been moved back to Start in the Spring of 2023.

There will likely be some activity along McKinley Avenue (like pole relocations) before the closure.

The City of Des Moines is currently making plans to reconstruct McKinley Avenue between SW 9th Street and South Union Street. The project will remove and replace the existing pavement with a curbed roadway, install storm sewer to replace open drainage along the edges of the road, and construct sidewalks along both sides of McKinley Avenue. The current schedule for this project is NOW to begin construction in spring/summer of 2023.

The City held a public information meeting on Wednesday May 12th 2021 at 6:00 PM to discuss this project. Several of our WHNA neighbors participated in the meeting. It was informative. The following link takes you to this projects website. In the website you will see a You Tube link to replay all 50 plus minutes of the May 12th presentation.

All of our WHNA Neighbors need to pay attention to this project. The projected detour is to be Union to Watrous to SW 9th to McKinley and the reverse. Most of us will have substantially disruptive traffic patterns to deal with during the majority to this reconstruction period. This likely could be for one or even two years.

The final results will be a nice improvement. We just need to learn the best ways to contend with the disruptions. We will try to use our WHNA website to keep you updated and advised.
